Building on a convergence of opportunities and new awareness around fighting human trafficking, funders gathered on October 2, to mark the release of “A Moment of Opportunity: A Tipping Point in the Fight Against Human Trafficking in the United States,” a new report and field scan that analyzes the different points in battling human trafficking and exploitation.
Presented by NEO Philanthropy, the session featured NEO grantees Kay Buck of the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking (CAST), Crystal DeBoise of the Urban Justice Center’s Sex Workers Project, Sameera Hafiz of National Domestic Workers Alliance and Martina Vandenberg of The Human Trafficking Pro Bono Legal Center. Florrie Burke, founder of the Freedom Network, moderated the conversation. Juhu Thukral, co-author of the report, made the case for bolstering a rights-based stateside movement with strategic philanthropic investments to prevent human trafficking, mitigate the suffering of its victims and provide ongoing support to its survivors.
Field Analysis
The new field analysis highlights the cross issues human trafficking invokes, ranging from economic inequality and workers’ rights, to criminal justice, racial justice, policing, immigration and immigrant rights, LGBTQ rights, sexual rights, gender-based violence and reproductive health. The analysis offers suggestions for addressing these intersecting social justice and human rights issues with the potential to leverage and propel gains in cross-constituency and cross-issue work.
