Donald Ross (1943–2022) Founder, Public Interest Projects (now NEO Philanthropy) Visionary Leader | Social Justice Advocate | Mentor
Donald Ross was a tireless advocate for the public good and a transformative figure in the world of social justice philanthropy. In 1983, he founded Public Interest Projects (PIP), now known as NEO Philanthropy, with the vision of supporting and strengthening grassroots movements across the United States. Under his leadership, and through his enduring influence, NEO Philanthropy has grown into a leading fiscal sponsor for nonprofit organizations and has launched collaborative funds such as the State Infrastructure Fund, which focuses on protecting democracy, and the Four Freedoms Fund, which advances immigrant rights.
Ross’s commitment to equity and justice extended far beyond his founding role at NEO. He served in a number of influential capacities, including as Executive Director of the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG), Director of the Rockefeller Family Fund, Board Chair of Greenpeace, and Co-founder of M+R Strategic Services. He was known not only for his strategic vision and organizing prowess but also for his compassion, humility, and deep investment in mentoring the next generation of changemakers.
Michele Lord, President of NEO Philanthropy, reflected on his lasting impact:
”As the founder of PIP, he gave me the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. A couple of years in, he told me to run with PIP and continued to serve as a wise counselor. He watched with pride as we grew. Donald was a great friend, a terrific husband and partner to Helen, and an amazing Dad.
Donald Ross passed away on May 14, 2022, following an illness. He leaves behind a profound legacy as a builder of institutions, a defender of democratic values, and a trusted ally to countless advocates and organizers. He will be remembered for his generosity, his unwavering commitment to justice, and his belief in the power of people to create meaningful change.
